Upon arrival this morning I could see four white dots flying over the gravel pit - dashing out of the car I could see Black-headed Gulls with one smaller bird that looked like a Black-headed Gull. The adrenalin started rushing as I fantasized about Franche-Comté's first Bonaparte's Gull, and panicking that it would bugger off before I could clinch the ID. Miraculously, they landed and indeed, it was just a small Black-headed Gull. Bollocks!
In other news, there was a Green Sandpiper, one Penduline Tit, Carlito the Cetti's Warbler, a Cirl Bunting, 24 Cranes and the first two Fieldfares of the autumn. A group of three and then a group of seven Gadwall dropped in and there was one female Wigeon. A Hen Harrier passed through and a Peregrine caused some panic from 29 Lapwings and about 150 Skylarks.
